Welcome to Heraklion, the largest city of Crete and the capital of the prefecture of Heraklion. The history of the city begins in antiquity as, according to mythology, it was the main port of Knossos. Due to various conquerors, the city changed many names so you will see it referred as “MegaloKastro” (big fortress), “Handax”, or “Candia”. It is one of the few coastal cities in Greece that was built not facing the sea as it was the only way of protection from continuous pirate attacks. Nowadays the development of the city outside the City Walls is different, so new building has a clear view of the Cretan Sea.
Just few steps away from the city centre is the area of AgiaTriada and the “Old City Aperments”. Also known as “Old Heraklion” or “Wooden Dambia” it was the most beautiful neighbourhood back then, with picturesque alleys, little houses with yards full of flowers and it has also a multicultural characteras it has always been inhabited by people of various social status and nationalities. It was considered a prestigious area and the presence of high – profile members of the community were common. Over the years, the area was almost abandoned. Today, more and more young people choose to return either by renovating their ancestors’ houses or by creating new businesses while maintaining the special charter of the neighbourhood. If you are in the mood for a walk, you can spend a morning exploring the dozensof alleys, see the old houses, be pleasantly surprised by the smell of cooking coming from various kitchens and end up on the coastal road.
