Over the years several modifications
LOGGIA
Facing the square, the building of Loggia is considered one of the most remarkable Venetian monuments. It was built by the Venetians during the first years of their occupation (1626-1628). It was used as a meeting place for noblemen, a kind of “Gentlemen’s Club”. During the Turkish domination, several damages occurred. Today it houses the Town Hall and has been restored. In the evenings, the courtyard is usually a meeting point for teenagers.
MOROSINI FOUNTAIN
In addition to Loggia, Francesco Morosini built the fountain, located in Eleftheriou Venizelou Square, also known as “Lions Square” due to the four lions that adorn it. The real reason for its construction was to supply the city with water from the springs of Mount Giouchtas. It is one of the greatest works of the Venetians and one of the most beautiful. At the top there was a statue of Poseidon, but it was destroyed in 1900 and was never restored to its original form. The fountain is also called “Lions” as it doesn’t come from the name of the lion statues. “Lions” are a classic meeting point for everybody.

Around the square there are many cafes and you can feed the pigeons that are the square’s leaders.
If you love good food and tasteful surprises, you must try some of the following Cretan traditional recipes.
KALITSOUNIA or LICHNARAKIA
The most famous and favorite sweet pastry all around Crete. They are made all year round but especially at Easter time. Made of dough filled with a mixture of sweet mizithra (local soft cheese). In Chania prefecture you will also taste them stuffed with salty mizithra or with local greens and herbs. From the shape, after the dough is closed, they got the name “lichnarakia” (little traditional oil lamps), but you will also find them in various shapes.
XEROTIGANA
The traditional wedding dessert. But you don’t have to go to a wedding to taste them, you will easily find them in traditional bakeries and pastry shops. The dough is rolled out by hand into a thin sheet, cut into strips and fried in extra virgin olive oil before being dipped in fine honey!
PILAFI or GAMOPILAFO (Rice in broth)
The famous first course in every wedding reception. Cretans call it “pilafi” and non-Cretans call it “gamopilafo”. Its origin has roots in ancient years where rice at weddings symbolized the “roots” of the couple and the abundance in their life. Its ingredients are simple but its taste is unbeatable and the secret
CHOCHLIOI (snails)
As you will notice, Cretans love snails more and more. Cretans eat snails in Crete as small/medium size and have nothing to do with the French escargots that you may have tasted abroad. They are collected by hand from nature, during rainy season, mainly at night or very early in the morning. They are cooked in various ways (with vinegar and rosemary), with seasonal vegetables (fennel, artichokes etc.), with rice or wheat and many more.
STAKA
A little bit difficult to find it but it’s worth looking for it. It’s a delicacy that comes from the crust that goat and sheep milk make after processing. By slowly heating it becomes a buttery cream with a texture between yogurt and butter. It’s used like butter and cooked with eggs, spaghetti, pilafi etc. but it can also be eaten raw with bread.
ANTIKRISTO
It’s not about some complicated recipe with rare ingredients, but about the cooking method that was used for centuries by shepherds in Crete. The meat (usually lamb) is placed opposite of a fire (not above it) and cooks slowly only with the heat. The only additional ingredient is salt. It results in a very special taste. It’s difficult to find nowadays, mainly in mountain villages of the island but now it’s easy to find in several taverns in the cities.
SOUVLAKI / GYROS
Greek street food
Even if it’s your first time visiting Greece, you surely know how much Greek people love their street food, souvlaki and gyros. Souvlaki is pieces of grilled meat (chicken or pork) on a stick and gyros is chopped meat (pork or chicken) in a pita bread with French fries, yogurt (or tzatziki), tomato and onion. You will find both of them all around the city but mostly downtown and you can enjoy them as a “take-away” too.
